NCAA NIL Settlement Application Deadline Challenged

Bradford Edwards LLP recently worked to publicize the now passed registration deadline (January 31, 2025) for DI men’s basketball and football athletes who played between 2016 and 2024 to claim a portion of the roughly $2.8 billion dollar proposed settlements negotiated with the NCAA over antitrust claims, including name, image and likeness, or NIL. The case is now pending in federal court in Oakland, CA. We believe that one of the problems with the proposed settlements was the lack of advertising aimed specifically at the Black community to get the word out to Black D1 players. For this reason, among others, Bradford Edwards filed a brief on behalf of two former Black D1 basketball players, opposing certain terms of the proposed settlements, including requesting an extension of the deadline. Our brief simply asked the court for terms that would be more favorable for Black, and other, D1 athletes.
